"Push the ball!" "Run,that's jogging,go,let's goooo!" Those were the commands barked loudly by the visiting coach during the first few minutes of a junior college women's basketball game last night. Shortly after the home team scored a fairly easy basket, the now furious coach called timeout. The score was 6-6 and obviously he'd seen enough. "If you don't want to play defense,sit on the bench!"

Well,this observer although caught off guard by what he was witnessing was quite impressed (if I must say so myself,lol). See, I've heard a whole heck of alot over the years about the success of the Roxbury Community College's basketball program but I respectfully submit that this was my very first time seeing the Lady Tigers in action.

Once play resumed, what I witnessed justified all of the positive accounts I've ever been exposed to. RCC clamped down on their "D" and picked up their tempo on offense, for the duration of the first half while going into the lockerroom with a jawdropping 55-15 lead at Bunker Hill Community College.

The second half was more of the same,therefore no need to publish the final score on this page.

Roxbury's program is considered a national powerhouse and rightfully so. They're a hardworking group of local and out of state student athletes that are lead by a coach that demands all of their effort every time they step on the court. The lady Tigers posted a 29-3 record last season and made a very strong run in the NJCAA National Tournament. This season look for them make another great run.

I look forward to seeing them play again!

The Brookline-JP Patriots Pop Warner organization will send a team to Disney next month after winning the New England Regional Championship this afternoon at Foley Field in Worcester,Ma. It was Brookline's Jr. Midget (B) squad that defeated the New Haven Steelers 10-0 to earn the right to represent New England in the annual National Championship tournament in Orlando,Fl.

New England Patriot President Jonathon Kraft was at the game, and as you can see by my EXCLUSIVE (lol) pics below,very much enjoyed the victory!

The Dorchester Pop Warner Midget A Football team overcame a sluggish first half to defeat the Brookline-JP Patriots yesterday at Everett Stadium.

The game was basically a tale of two halves as the perennial powerhouse Eagles couldn't get anything going offensively in a first half that featured fumbles,penalties and uninspired blocking. The Eagles quarterback was constantly under pressure by Brookline and the running backs struggled to find room to run between the tackles,or outside them for that matter. Donning their new uniforms this season which feature the color red in addition to their traditional blue and white,one might've mistaken this version of the DPW for just another team after witnessing the first 20 minutes of action. This was NOT your big brother's Eagle team.

But,in the latter part of the 3rd quarter,things changed.....

The Eagles seemed to shake off some rust and come back fighting. It must be noted that talent wise,this team is loaded with alot of gifted players that have played scores of games and have alot of post season experience as well. Eventually it started to show. The quarterback play was superb and the defense stepped up it's intensity. Brookline's lead in the 4rth quarter was erased when the Dorchester quarterback tucked the ball away and raced 67 yards for an absolutely thrilling touchdown with only a few minutes left in the game. (the time was kept by onfield officials for the majority of the game) Soon after ,an Eagle defender picked off a Brookline pass,and with the help of a bone jarring block, returned it inside the 5 yardline to set up the final score . Final score: Dorchester Eagles 20,Brookline-JP 12.

Dorchester Defeats Burke in Thursday Matchup

Hello Everyone. The Dorchester High Bears overcame a sluggish first half on the offensive side of the ball and managed to capatilize on J.E. Burke's turnovers on their way to a hardfought 14-0 victory at White Stadium Thursday. The much improved Bulldawgs from Burke were dealt a couple of questionable blows from the officials as well.Burke had not only a touchdown called back because of a hold,but a touchback that featured a premature whistle. Overall,the Bears outslugged their opponents late in the game,after going into haltime tied 0-0. Team depth was a factor as well as the Burke just doesn't have the numbers at this stage to rotate enough fresh players in and out of games. An exiting pick 6 proved to be the difference.

Congratulations to Dorchester High on their victory. That being said,alot of credit and admiration must also go to the Burke players and coaches. They've come a long way in a short time. They play hard every down and show no signs of quitting. It's hard to put into words, but if you watch this team play for 4 quarters you can't help but to notice that their coaching staff has laid down a strong foundation that shows an abundance of promise.

Hello Everyone, South Boston High's James Toles is one of the premier football players in Boston. The senior running back/linebacker is a tremendous two way player who just seems to be everywhere on the field. In addition to scoring touchdowns (he had 3 in the first HALF of Friday's game at English High),Toles does a good job chasing ball carriers sideline to sideline on defense,and is a very aggressive blocker who will attack defenders with total disregard for his own body. He's a special player that deserves to be accounted for as soon as he steps off the bus. And to all of the Knights upcoming opponents; don't say I didn't warn you,lol. Peace!

One day I'll blog about talk radio in general. One day I'll take up my reader's precious time by sharing with them my "good ole days" when as a child in the 70's I'd listen to a sports talk radio show while soaking my tail in the tub on Sunday nights (already too much info,lol). Perhaps when I truely have time, I may also try as best I can, to understand why hearing an African -American or "minority" on air personality on talk radio in Boston is as scarce as hmm,let's see.....a pay phone!!!
But tonight is not the evening for such discussions,nope. This evening I simply want to express,that in this writer's opinion that it may in fact be advantageous for local radio stations to avoid hiring Black talent for their shows. Case in point, the not yet 2 year old WBZFM 98.5 station. "The Sports Hub" as they call themselves, recently became arguably the most popular FM station as far as sports talk is concern. The latest ratings have them pretty much blowing 850AM WEEI out of the water as far as popularity among 18-50 something males. WEEI which has been an annual ratings giant for the past decade is the home of the Dennis & Callahan show that once compared African - American METCO students to a gorilla that temporarily escaped from the Franklin Pk. Zoo. This evening on the Felger & Massaroti Show,co-host Micheal Felger complained for several minutes about Boston cab drivers as being "all Jamaican " and "not knowing the city at all". He went on to say that they "suck" and can't answer any questions a passenger may have about Boston. Co-host Tony Massaroti and whoever the guy who acts as a 3rd wheel for them added their dissatisfaction with local cabbies and indicted that "they all talk constantly on their cell phones" and depsite having GPS,still get lost. Well,this is coming from people who should know better. Both Felger and Massarotti have worked as reporters for the Boston Herald as well as on air personalities for (you guessed it) WEEI.
Chances are their wide audience will give them credit for in THEIR opinion "keeping it real",and not complain at all. Tomorrow probably won't bring ANY outcry from cabbies or the community they serve. BUT, as an all grown up,lifelong Bostonian and sports fanatic,whose only desire when listening to sports radio is to in fact listen to hosts,callers and guests conduct dialogue about sports,I've once again been disappointed.

Tuesday afternoon saw O'Bryant score a big win over a strong Hyde Park squad at Madison Park as well as Snowden High coming up big against a solid Fenway team over at Jim Rice Field. The cloudy skies which produced a few light and windy showers at times didn't prevent all four teams from playing hard and doing there best. These kids love to play baseball and this writer enjoys going out to see them. In addition,I encourage everyone who can attend these games to in fact get out and support our local student athletes!

Well,Sonofcodmansquare finally returned to the baseball diamond yesterday. The game pitted host Brighton High against Silver Lake High of the Patriot League. The Bengals jumped out to a 3-0 lead early,knocking the Lakers starter out of the game,before surrendering 8 unanswered runs in a tough 8-3 loss at Rogers Park.

The annual Shriner's high school all star football game will once again be played this June at Gillette Stadium. The game features the 100 top high school seniors in Massachusetts. What bothers me is that out of that 100,only one player attending a Boston Public School (Boston Latin School ) will be playing in the game. Well,the last time I checked Boston Latin plays in the Dual County League which is made up of several suburban teams. Therefore ,there will be NO Boston City League student- athletes on the rosters.That is a shame. I realize that the Shriners have every right to invite (or not invite) any player it wishes,BUT,nobody who knows anything about the 2010 season can honestly say that players such as Brandon Campbell of East Boston High or John D. O'Bryant High's Omari Alfred, just to name a couple, are not in the Top 50 of high school football players in The Commonwealth. I also realize that this game is a fundraiser of sorts so if in fact the criteria for being invited to play in this game is based on how much money a player ,his school,or his conference can raise before being invited, than I wish that would be made clear to the public as well as perspective student-athletes.

When the local newspapers are doing their research,compiling their votes,and contemplating who will be fortunate enough to be included on their 2011 All-Scholastic and Dream Teams,they really need to look no further than Boston's Fenway High School where arguably the finest point guard in Massachusetts Division 4 high school hoop has been doing her thing for the past 2 seasons.
Tajanay Veiga-Lee,just completed her second season at Fenway and has quietly built up a body of work on the hardwood that makes her very worthy of such an honor. This 5 foot 5 inch sophomore records triple-doubles pretty much every game and is the floor general on a Fenway squad that has gone deep into the MIAA playoffs both years she's been there. She's well respected by coaches and players throughout the Boston City League and is always considered a player that opponents are most concerned with when she has the ball in her hands. She's extremely quick off the dribble,finishes at the rim with either hand and despite her size,has very impressive rebounding skills. Add to that her outside shooting that has broke the spirit of many a team attempting to rally their way back into a game vs. Fenway.

New Mission High School jumped out to a 17 point halftime lead thanks to senior Darius Davis' 13 point first half on their way to a 67-57 victory over Northridge High to win their second Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association State Basketball title in as many years.The game which was played at Worcester's DCU Center this afternoon was actually not as close as the final score indicates. New Mission often maintained leads of 20 points or well into the 4rth quarter. Two other New Mission players scored in double figures (Samir McDaniels 16,and Kachi Nzerem 15) as the Titans shared the ball well throughout the game.

The 2010-11 New Mission basketball team will play Northbridge High at the DCU Center in Worcester,Ma. tomorrow afternoon in search of back to back state hoop titles. Last season's MIAA Division 4 Champions will be vying their first title in their new Division (2). Good luck to the Titans from Roxbury's Mission Hill section as they are not only the last Boston based school left in the annual statewide tournament,but perhaps will make history as the only school to win back to back titles in different divisions (can somebody look that one up for me?).

YESSSSS!!! The New Mission Titans boys basketball team are the 2011 MIAA Eastern Mass. Division 2 Champions. After playing a very close game well into the 4rth quarter,the Titans proved to be too much for Hopkington High to handle as pulled away in the final minutes on their way to a 67-56 victory tonight at the Garden.

The New Mission Lady Titans came up just short of a MIAA Division 4 State Championship this afternoon at the T.D. Garden versus Hull High. New Mission,who came into the game with an admireable 18-5 record,got behind early but rallied to tied the game at 26 a piece at halftime. Hull High took a nine point advantage into the final quarter but New Mission once again rallied and cut the deficit down to 2 points with 2 minutes left. Ultimately,key foul shooting by the Pirates sealed New Mission's fate. Final score Hull 59,New Mission 55.
Sonofcodmansquare.com has nothing but respect and great thoughts about this New Mission squad and the program in general. With only 3 seniors on it's 14 person roster,as well as very talented underclassmen playing key roles on this Division 4 North Champion team,even a casual observer would have to believe that a State Championship is very much on the horizon. Last night's convincing 68-46 victory over Burlington High, solidified their spot in this weekend's MIAA Division 2 North Championship game. It also made alot of folks take notice that this squad is serious and is not going to be an easy out. Congratulations to Brighton Head Coach Hugh Coleman for the outstanding job he's done with these young men. Fenway Girls Move On!

Fenway High Girls hoop squad took a 25 point lead into the locker room at the half last night as they cruised to a 65-49 victory over Whittier Tech in Billerica. The Lady Panthers, led by Kaila Duarte (top picture below) were just too tough for Whittier and scored 13 unanswered points to start the game. Fenway was in control of this game throughout,and proved to be totally dominant on the defensive end as well as the boards. Even during Fenway's somewhat cold shooting period in the 3rd quarter,Whittier was never able to keep Fenway from getting offensive rebounds and converting them into easy layups. Congrats to the ladies from Fenway High as they move on to a weekend contest at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell this weekend in search of a Miaa Division 4 North crown.

New Mission Bounces Back,Throttles Reading

This game began in a quite unusual manner. A rarely enforced rule that prohibits dunking by any player during pregame warmups was enforced. New Mission was the culprit and their opponent ,Reading High was awarded two free throw attempts to start the game. The Reading player proceeded to make his first attempt and missed the second. In addition ,the ball was awarded to Reading to inbound rather than the traditional tipoff to begin the game.

That series of events was one of the rare occasions last night that New Mission allowed an uncontested shot as they harassed,intimidated,and totally overwhelmed (and seemed to have swatted away every layup attempt Reading made) Reading with smothering defense on their way to an easy victory at the Reggie Lewis Center.

New Mission,coming off of a Boston City League Tournament defeat last Friday to East Boston, excelled on both ends of the court and put the game out of reach by halftime.

Cathedral High wasted no time last night as the host Panthers jumped right on Bristol -Plymouth High and never let up. The result was an extremely impressive 80-61 victory at Union Park. Cathedral seemed to be all over and around the ball all night and held the visitors to only 5 points in the first quarter and 19 at the half.
The game was Cathedral's opening round game of the Eastern Mass. tournament. According to Miaa.net their next game is on the road against Westport,at Westport on Friday.

The Fenway High Lady Panthers coming off a tough loss in last Friday's Boston City League Tournament Championship game bounced back big time and defeated Presentation of Mary Academy 65-12 at Orchard Garden K-8 Elementary School this evening. The game which was the 1rst round of the MIAA Division 4 North playoffs, featured all of the 3 point shooting,lockdown defense,and enthusiasm that Fenway is known for.

Charlestown Prevails In O.T.

Well,this game said two things to this writer: 1.) There is no such thing as a guaranteed dub in the Boston City League,regardless of what some observers might think. 2.) Don't EVER count Madison Park out in their own building.....or anywhere else for that matter. Charlestown (undefeated in the City League at that point) appeared to be well on their way of repeating their previous performance against the Cardinals of MP, before at some point in the 4rth quarter,someone let the dogs out so to speak. This relatively young MP squad went on a run that saw them overcome a double digit deficit and gain a lead near the very end of regulation.
Charlestown pulled away in overtime and showed why they are perhaps the best team in the city,but MP deserves an awful lot of credit for the fight they put up as well. R.J..

New Mission Girls Victorious In Rematch!

This was not your ordinary,garden variety,whatever-whatever,friendly game of basketball. This wasn't a game where style points,courtesy,and acting ladylike were going to make you a success.Not in this building,not on this night.
That being said, the Lady Titans from New Mission High put on their game faces,brought their lunch pales and went right to work in what would turn out to be a major statement game.They scrapped for every loose ball,went hard after every rebound and maintained their composure in the heat of battle while walking out of O'Bryant High School with a big win on Tuesday night.
The host Lady Tigers took the first game played between these powerhouse teams back in December but weren't able to contain New Mission on this night.There will definitely be better days ahead for O'Bryant,but on this night New Mission was not to be denied.

West Roxbury High Boy's hoop squad took another giant step toward next week's BPS Tournament with a hard fought 73-70 overtime victory Monday evening in Brighton. In a game that was as close as it gets,Westie did all it could to fight off a talented and resiliant Bengal team. Westie led by one at the half and the game was tied at 50 at the end of the 3rd quarter. This game was so close that it really wasn't decided till the clock turned to all zeroes. Congrats and good luck to both teams who no doubt will be a tough out in the Eastern Mass. Tournament!

Hello Everyone,
By now I'm sure you've all heard about the thrilla of a hoop game played last Thursday at Madison Park High School. It was all that & then some. Eastie,fighting off MP,MP taking Eastie's best shot and literally jumping off the mat and countering,then finally Eastie delivering the knockout blow in the last seconds of double overtime.It was a classic in every way as dunks & 3 pointers took place in clutch situations and both defenses harassed the youknowwhat out of each other. Both of these schools have great traditions in basketball going back to the 1980's and whenever they get together it's always a can't miss for spectators. Good luck to both programs going forward!

Good Afternoon Everyone. Whenever you have the opportunty,please check out a Junior Varsity (JV) game. Whether it's a football game on a Monday afternoon,or a basketball game an hour or two before a varsity game,these predominantly freshman and sophomore layden squads put on quite a show. JV is all about developing and nuturing future varsity players but the spirit and drive to win games is just as intense. These pics are from yesterday's Brighton -New Mission contest. The gym was loud with fans and the game was upbeat and well played. Therefore, don't ever tell these future stars that their games are not important. What's even more impressive is their average margin of victory which is a whopping 32 points. Forecast For City Hoops;Bright and Sunny!

It's 5:45pm. on a recent afternoon and the weather outside is cold and dreary to say the least. The forecast for the next 24 hours is so dismal that the City of Boston has already announced that all of it's schools will be closed the following day.That's outside the Hennigan School. On the inside of the Jamaica Plain based elementary school the atmosphere is much more warm and promising. In the gymnasium two high school hoop teams are preparing to play each other for the first time this season. The Fenway Lady Panthers are at the far end of the gym,all smiles as they pose for a team picture. This is their home court. The visiting Lady Cardinals from Madison Park warm up with passing,shooting,and layup drills. They are all business and not short on game faces. Spectators from both schools filled the bleachers as Lloyd Banks's ,"Start It Up" could be heard very prominently from the speakers place behind the baseline.
Cold outside,very warm inside. That's high school hoop in the city. And that's a good thing.

Hyde Park's Midget A Pop Warner football team advanced to the semi -finals of the Pop Warner National Championships this afternoon with a huge 34-6 victory over the Bryan Buccaneers from Florida. Hyde Park will square off against another Florida based team on Wednesday as they will face the Overtown Rattlers for the opputunity to play in next Saturday's final. Good luck Hyde Park!
